Success Stories: One Year Later...CNO Transition at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital

Project Background

Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Darby, PA, a 256-bed community teaching hospital and member of Mercy Health System/Catholic Health East, was seeking a new Chief Nursing Officer to join the senior management team in leading a comprehensive turnaround strategy for the organization. The desired profile for this critical role focused on a proven nurse executive who could serve as the catalyst for change in a union nursing environment, and develop practical initiatives to support the hospital’s goals of education, quality patient care, and improved financial performance.

Management Pathways was engaged to conduct the search and developed a targeted regional strategy while leveraging the firm’s professional contacts among senior nurse executives and health care leaders. The MP search team conducted in-person interviews with several qualified individuals and presented a final group of three candidates within a 40-day time frame. After comprehensive interviews with the hospital’s management team and key stakeholders from Mercy Health System, two strong finalists were identified. An outstanding candidate was hired who brought leadership experience from academic, tertiary, and community hospital environments. Management Pathways facilitated design of the employment offer and final negotiations with the candidate, and has maintained frequent contact with the candidate throughout the on-boarding process and first year of employment to ensure a smooth assimilation process.

One Year Later

The CNO has made a significant contribution to advancing the nursing practice at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, restructuring the management team to align with organizational goals, and has garnered the trust and support of the medical staff. Her leadership influence has extended beyond improving the quality of patient care, and has made a positive impact on bottom line financial performance.
