Success Stories: Children's Health System, Birmingham, AL
Children’s Health System, Birmingham, AL, a leading center for pediatric research, training, and specialized care was expanding due to an increased demand for services. A strong O.R. Director with experience in a high volume, complex environment was sought to evaluate current processes and facilitate improvements in anticipation of continued growth. The extremely competitive national market for surgical services directors created a barrier to recruitment, compounded by the need to identify a leader who would fit the unique mission and culture at CHS.
Management Pathways was engaged to conduct the search and developed a regional/national strategy focusing on academic medical centers, tertiary hospitals, and children’s specialty hospitals. A “Target 250” list of candidates was created through fresh, in-house research from organizations concentrated throughout the Southeast, as well as children’s hospitals across the country. The CHS brand was promoted throughout the search and incorporated in a customized mailing and more detailed position specification.
Against a competitive landscape, an exceptional candidate was identified, interviewed and recruited from a large tertiary hospital affiliated with two medical schools. The candidate was presented to CHS within seven weeks from the completion of the preliminary site visit and development of a position specification, and subsequently hired. Management Pathways facilitated design of the employment offer and final negotiations with the candidate.
“We have been very pleased with the O.R. Director. Her first month with Children’s has been very active. She has interacted with the staff, surgeons, and administration in a very effective manner. She is demonstrating the skills needed to support the staff, to make modifications to staffing patterns, to recommend changes to block time, and has shown strength in financial management. She is an excellent fit for our culture, for our leadership needs, and for us to continue the growth in pediatric surgery. We could not be more pleased with her and look forward to the future with her leadership.”
